Online Seminar NaturaConnect.PT: Ecological Connectivity in the Context of Land Planning and Management in Portugal

On April 11, the first Online Seminar of the NaturaConnect project will be held in Portugal. The online event will be an opportunity to discuss ecological connectivity in Portugal from the perspective of land management and planning instruments. Targeting land planners, nature conservation technicians from the Public Administration, NGOs and academia, the participation is free, and registrations can be done at bit.ly/seminarioconectividade.

Biodiversity and ecological connectivity are unavoidable topics concerning the European Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the Nature Restoration Law, approved by the European Parliament on February 28, 2024.

Achieving the goals set by these policy instruments requires translating their guidelines and recommendations into concrete actions with a positive impact on people, the economy, biodiversity, and the environment. For this, the direct involvement of various levels of governance is necessary for land planning and management, nature conservation, water, climate action, agriculture, forestry, and their respective local actors.

The session ‘Ecological Connectivity in the Context of Land Planning and Management in Portugal’ is the first of its kind, dedicated to informing technicians and decision-makers in these areas. It’s a unique opportunity to foster debate on the definition and implementation of connectivity structures in coordination with active and adaptive management in the context of climate change. The seminar will be based on the complex Portuguese legislative framework, providing practical insights, good practice and strategies for the attendees.

This online event is organised in the framework of the Natura Connect project, led by the University of Évora – Chair of Biology, with the Directorate-General for Territory and the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. An initiative following the establishment of the Think Tank NaturaConnect.PT, whose mission is to promote the necessary transformation to reverse biodiversity loss, restore degraded ecosystems, and establish ecological connectivity in Portugal in coordination with a Trans-European Network for Nature Conservation.
